MPs and church leaders walk to highlight safe drinking water crisis
Written by Debbie Enever
Sunday, 16 March 2008
At 9.45am on Tuesday, 18th March MPs including David Drew MP (Lab), All Party Group on Water & Sanitation; Andy Reed MP (Lab); Mark Lancaster MP (Con), Shadow International Development Team; Alistair Burt MP (Con), Assistant Chief Whip and Michael Moore MP (Lib), Shadow International Development Secretary, will be joined by the Rt. Rev Nick Baines, the Bishop of Croydon; Bishop Wilton Powell, Overseer of the Church of God of Prophecy; Rev Joel Edwards, General Director of the Evangelical Alliance and Rev David Shosanya, Regional Minister, London Baptist Association, to walk four miles from the House of Commons to a drinking fountain at the End of Rotten Row in Hyde Park and back.

Photo opportunities will be available at both locations and the walkers will carry water containers used by families in Liberia.

The four mile walk represents the average distance walked daily by women and children in developing countries just to collect enough water - 20 litres - for a family’s basic requirements. Often that water is dirty and unhygienic and contributes to the appalling statistic that every 20 seconds a child in the developing world dies from disease related to drinking dirty water.

March 22nd is World Water Day and a total of 73 MPs have signed Early Day Motion 897 in support of the Turn On The Tap Challenge Walk.

This walk by the politicians and church leaders is the first of hundreds of Turn On The Tap Challenge Walks throughout the UK aimed at raising funds to provide safe and accessible drinking water to communities, mainly in Africa, via means such as water filters and boreholes. The walks are being organised by the Christian humanitarian relief organisation Samaritan’s Purse (UK).

Members of the media will be able to interview the MPs and church leaders, along with senior representatives of the humanitarian relief organisation, who will explain the aims of the nationwide Turn On The Tap Challenge Walks.
