Regional Update

Carole O’Toole reflects on the LDCF participation at the latest Welsh Party conference.

TO SING OR NOT TO SING..... ...this was the question, as we waited to see how many people we would have in the congregation as a result of our first attempt to hold a short service at a Welsh conference.

We knew there would be three of us, me and Martin Sheldon, with Professor Ian Barton who was giving the short address.....but could 3 voices do justice to the two hymns Martin had included in the service? We decided if there were six of us we would sing the hymns, and there were, and we were in good voice! The service was meaningful and enjoyable and we listened to an excellent address from Ian on Mark's gospel's "render unto Caesar" passage. All present felt we should hold another service at the Welsh spring conference in Swansea next year.

We also had a stall at the conference which looked good as a result of Martin's hard work. We recruited one new member.

Overall I was pleased with the response. We really did not know if anyone would turn up for the service! I do not think it is worth paying for a stall in future, but I am reasonably confident that with more publicity numbers at a service will grow and hopefully also our membership. Also, Martin and I would like to plan the occasional fringe meeting, perhaps with a group such as Christian Aid.

I feel we can only make progress, and we would welcome any advice or suggestions from other regional organisers who have planned similar events as to how we can move forward.
