It was with shock and great sadness that we learnt of the untimely death of Julian Cummins, the Liberal Democrat Christian Forum’s treasurer, who died suddenly whilst on holiday in Majorca on Friday 9th February. It came as a great shock to all of us. It is impossible to think of Julian without remembering his vivacity and liveliness in every aspect of his life.
Martin Turner, LDCF Chair, said “Julian was an active, passionate and wise man. Over the years he has contributed much to the work of LDCF, and has recently been pivotal in his role as treasurer.
“He was a pleasure to work with and to know. He was a real ambassador for his faith and for his politics. Always courteous, he was an accomplished communicator and counsellor.
“LDCF and the Liberal Democrats will miss his counsel and vision, and our prayers are with his family and friends.”
Julian, a Vice-President of the Yorkshire and the Humber Region Liberal Democrats, had been Chair of the Region in the mid-1990s and it was his enthusiasm and vision that concentrated the regional party on targeting its limited resources . This policy resulted in winning Harrogate and Knaresborough and Sheffield Hallam in the 1997 General Election. In 1999 it was again his contribution to the region which assisted in gaining the region’s first Liberal Democrat MEP. Julian had stood as a parliamentary candidate and had erved on Leeds City Council.
Julian brought his concern for church involvement in politics into his vision for the Churches Regional Commission for Yorkshire and the Humber, which began in 1998. As a founding member of the CRC and its chair for several years, he was also a board member of Yorkshire Forward from its inception in 1998, and was a representative of faith communities on the Yorkshire Assembly for four years.
