LDCF Director and one of our representatives on the Christians in Politics (CiP) board, Zöe Franklin, fills us in on the latest developments of CiP.
CiP is a cross-party group formed from the Christian organisations of the LibDem (LDCF), Labour (Christian Socialist Movement) and Conservative (Conservative Christian Fellowship) parties. The main aims of the group are:
- To recruit Christians into mainstream political parties and their recognised Christian groups
- To teach Christians how and why they should participate in government and politics
- To encourage and resource Christians who are members of the three major political parties.
For the past year or so, CiP have employed a part-time Project Manager, Esther Phillips. Unfortunately, due to a reduction in available funding and other personal reasons Esther had to resign from the position at the end of August. Since joining CiP she has been a driving force behind its growth and will be sadly missed. Over the coming months the hole left by Esther will be filled, at least partially, by Zöe Franklin who will be working on an ad-hoc basis dealing with administrative queries, etc. However, please be patient if you need to contact CiP for any reason.
Recent months have publicly been fairly quiet for CiP with the partner organisations instead working busily behind the scenes preparing to launch a fresh initiative to create a strategic partnership between CiP and other Christian organisations to continue the work of CiP. The first Christians in Politics Conference with potential partner organisations is due to take place on Tuesday 23 October 2007 in Portcullis House. The invitation only event is designed to provide an opportunity for CiP to meet with interested organisations - such as CARE, the Evangelical Alliance and Joint Churches Policy Group - to share their vision and goals for the future, and discuss the possibility of a partnership being formed.
Looking to the future, with the continuing challenges and opportunities presented to CiP throughout the Christian community and political arena your prayer support would be most welcome. In particular please pray into the following areas:
- Praise God for the open doors CiP has been presented with
- That the planning for the CiP Conference would proceed smoothly and the appropriate organisations would be able to attend
- For wisdom to know which other opportunities we should pursue
- For continued unity between the groups involved in CiP
- Resources (financial and other) for the work CiP undertake.
