The Biblical precedent for praying for our leaders, whether political, churchbased or otherwise, is made clear in the words of Paul in 1 Timothy 2:1-4: “I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving be made for everyone – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good and pleases God our saviour who wants all men to be saved and to come to a full knowledge of the truth”. (NIV)
However, praying for individuals who seem as remote as politicians often do can seem daunting and as a result we can adopt an attitude of 'I don't need to pray; someone else will'. Yes, someone else probably will but imagine the impact if every Christian took the time to pray, even if it was just for five minutes a day...
To help ease the fear-factor we've put together a series of pointers to guide you how best to pray for our political leaders.
- Pray for the Prime Minister and Government departments: for the responsibilities of office and difficulties of decision making, for the government's policy making programme, for their use of resources and accountability.
- Pray for the Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and other parties that they would hold the Government to account effectively.
- Find out who your local MP is and pray for: their faith; their family issues – the pressures of being away from home regularly; their workload; their constituency work.
- Pray for members of the House of Lords: for wise decision making and the ability to effectively work with and criticise the Government.
