Why I am a Christian and a Lib Dem

E-mail Print PDF

LDCF asked a range of members why they were Christians and Lib Dems, and why they joined LDCF - their responses demonstrate the range of opinions and viewpoints that come together to make the Forum:

"They say one should never talk about politics or religion.   I’m not one to conform!!   I’m delighted to talk about both, and that’s why I’ve joined LDCF!!" - Tim Young

"LDCF's aim is to help you to stop chickening out!  Maybe you've sometimes dodged taking serious political issues into your church, or putting your christian faith into politics, and afterwards wished you'd done better.  Who hasn't?  LDCF exists so its members can support each other in the move we all need to make: from chicken to dove." - Andrew Stunell

"Christians involved in politics can be much more effective when they work together.   LDCF enables Christians who support the Lib Dems to get together, encourage one another, pray and worship together and to unite in putting their faith into practice.  If you are a Christian and a Lib Dem, I would encourage you to join LDCF" - Steve Webb

Party Piece

A huge problem in recent decades is that Biblically inspired Christian concern for fairness and justice, compassion for those who are exploited and righteous anger at those acts of exploitation have become - for some - a convenient excuse not to talk about those more awkward elements of Christian doctrine.  Issues such as personal morality and, fundamentally, the doctrine of man’s sinfulness and of men and women being the rightful objects of the wrath of a righteous and holy God – and mankind’s need therefore for salvation and the wonderful provision of that salvation through Jesus Christ.

Constitutional reform... what we have all been waiting for

E-mail Print PDF

The state of politics in the UK is bad, the level of public trust and respect of politicians has perhaps reached an all time low.  One might argue that feelings of disengagement and apathy have grown into active hostility and anger.  This level of public outcry is without doubt largely due to the behaviour of many MPs (although certainly not as many as vilified by the Telegraph), and the expenses that they have claimed over recent years.

The Liberal Democrat Christian vision for Britain

E-mail Print PDF

(From an article originally written for the Methodist Times.)

The focus for Liberal Democrats in the 2010 election campaign is fairness.  The targets: the tax system, politics, the economy, and equal opportunities for our children.

The tax system is urgent need of reformation.  The current system means that the poorest in our society pay proportionally more tax on their earnings than the richest.  The Liberal Democrats have promised to raise the threshold at which people start paying income tax to £10,000, which would cut the average working age person’s income tax bill by £700 and pensioners’ income tax bills by £100.
